What is soil structure in a nutshell?

When we’re talking about soil structure, three components make up your dirt.

First, to assess topsoil’s quality, pay attention to the arrangement of particles in the ground and how well they’re spaced apart.

If there is enough room for air between them, your soil is healthy.

This will also determine whether plants can grow properly on it (we must consider soil texture. Generally, sandy loam soils would be better suited than clay ones).

The factors that have an impact on your soil structure include:

• The amount of organic matter contained,
• Organisms (such as worms and bugs),
• The amount of tillage per season,
• Any freeze/thaw that occurs,
• Water flow and movement,
• The presence and size of soil colloids

How to improve soil structure then?

• Increase or decrease the level of organic matter:

Organic fertilizers contribute to increasing both water-holding capacity and cation exchange capacity. Therefore, they improve the whole soil structure. Organic fertilizers also are valuable sources of micronutrients to plants.

• Increase soil organisms:

Soil is home to a diverse ecosystem. Bacteria, fungi, and critters hold the soil together, but they also help break it down for easier digestion by plants!
